Hunting and Gathering by Susan Gofstein

CMelon and Tongue

The McLean County Arts Center is pleased to exhibit an exhibition of mixed media two-dimensional artwork by Susan Gofstein in the Armstrong Gallery from August 19 – October 1, 2011. An artist reception – free and open to the public – is scheduled for Friday, September 2, from 5pm to 7pm in conjunction with downtown Bloomington’s F1rst Fr1days.

About the Exhibition

The impetus for Susan Gofstein’s exhibition Hunting and Gathering began surprisingly with the remodeling of her bathroom. Susan saved sections of her wood wall paneling papered with a French toile de jouy pattern of pastoral living. The pattern provided a background to play with two and three-dimensional space and explore the fine boundary between the blissful and yet banal activities of the figures. Gofstein experimented with collage, painting, and drawing on the unique and challenging surface to create mysterious new narrative fragments. The results are intriguing and otherworldly.
